Introduction

India is a domestic-demand economy with a long investment runway.

Consumption matters because of population scale. Investment matters because infrastructure, manufacturing, housing and digitalisation are still expanding. Inflation matters because food, fuel and the rupee can quickly affect household purchasing power.

The central question is: Can India sustain strong domestic demand and investment while inflation, the rupee and external balances allow the Reserve Bank of India to keep policy supportive?

Three data groups matter most. Consumption and credit show whether domestic demand is broadening. Investment and infrastructure show whether growth is becoming more productive. Inflation, the rupee and external balances show how much policy room the RBI has.

For India, data analysis is ultimately about the durability of domestic growth.
