Introduction
On Saturday (3 January), President Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been detained. He wrote that the United States had “successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leadership,” and that President Maduro and his wife had been taken into custody and transferred out of the country.
This development rapidly prompted global markets to reassess energy supply pathways, the future direction of sanctions, and the broader geopolitical landscape.
When high-risk geopolitical events occur, market participants’ initial reactions typically focus on commodities such as gold, silver, and crude oil, as well as traditional safe-haven currencies like the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen. Such reactions are understandable. From a methodological perspective, however, the more important task is not to ask “what to buy” after the event, but first to realign one’s analytical framework.
Investment is not kè zhōu qiú jiàn—the mechanical application of past patterns to new circumstances. In complex systems, reliance on experience or emotional reaction alone rarely produces a stable understanding. What truly matters is the ability, at the earliest stage of an event, to determine its structural position: does it alter long-term constraints, or does it merely amplify short-term risk sentiment?
Against this backdrop, it is necessary to compare the Venezuelan operation in early 2026 with the U.S. military strike on Syria in April 2017, and to examine, through a “spatial” analytical lens, how these two types of events differ in their implications for trend formation.
The sections that follow move beyond surface-level commentary. They are written for readers who wish to understand how structure, space, and cognition interact — and how this understanding can be applied consistently across cycles and asset classes.
