Introduction

In today’s aerospace and defence sector, few companies operate at the intersection of space infrastructure, autonomous systems and defence technology. Historically, many firms have specialised in a single segment of the value chain, whether launch services, satellite operations or defence platforms. Increasingly, however, technological convergence is creating opportunities for companies capable of bridging multiple domains.

One manifestation of this trend is the emergence of companies that combine space-based technologies with autonomous platforms and mission-critical defence applications. Such businesses are exposed to several long-term themes, including commercial space activity, government space programmes, military modernisation and the increasing adoption of autonomous systems.

The significance of this positioning lies in the fact that the underlying demand drivers are distinct. Space infrastructure projects are often characterised by long development cycles, high technical complexity and close links to government budgets. Defence technology, particularly autonomous systems and uncrewed platforms, is increasingly shaped by geopolitical priorities, military modernisation programmes and allied defence expenditure.

This makes the analysis more nuanced. A company operating across these domains cannot be assessed solely as a space supplier, a defence contractor or an autonomous systems provider. Rather, it must be evaluated through the interaction of these capabilities: whether its space heritage enhances its defence relevance, whether autonomous platforms can create scalable production opportunities, and whether government-linked demand can ultimately translate into durable financial performance.
