Introduction
Australia is a developed economy with a commodity cycle at its core.
Its households, banks, housing market and services sector all matter. But Australia’s external cycle is still heavily shaped by resources, especially iron ore, coal, LNG and demand from China.
The central question is:
Are commodity exports and China-linked demand strong enough to support national income, while inflation and housing pressures allow the Reserve Bank of Australia to avoid excessive tightening?
Three data groups matter most.
Commodity prices and export volumes show the external income impulse. China demand shows whether that impulse is likely to persist. Inflation, wages and housing show how the domestic economy absorbs the external cycle.
For Australia, data analysis is ultimately about the link between commodities, income and rates.
