22. The Data Behind the Cycle: Singapore
Clarity in a Changing World.

Introduction
Singapore is a small economy with a large external cycle.
Its domestic market is limited, but its trade, finance, logistics and services links are global. This means Singapore often feels changes in global demand, capital flows and imported prices before they appear in broader domestic data.
The central question is:
Is global demand strong enough to support trade and services, and can exchange-rate policy contain imported inflation without weakening growth?
Three data groups matter most.
Trade and manufacturing show how external demand is passing through the economy. Inflation shows how global prices and domestic costs affect households and firms. The Singapore dollar shows how the Monetary Authority of Singapore manages price stability in a small, open economy.
For Singapore, data analysis is ultimately about external transmission.
