Introduction
Trend analysis begins with data, but it does not end with data.
Economic data are valuable not simply because they are published regularly, revised carefully, or closely watched by financial markets. Their real value lies in their ability to reveal changes in the underlying structure and logic of an economy. A single data release rarely defines a trend. However, when key indicators begin to change, the assumptions supporting an existing trend may also need to be reconsidered.
This distinction is fundamental to macroeconomic analysis. Data should not be used merely to confirm an existing view; they should also be used to test whether that view remains valid. If the data supporting a conclusion remains intact, the conclusion may still deserve confidence. If the data begin to undermine the original logic, the conclusion must be reassessed.
In other words, data are not conclusions; they are signals. They help us determine whether the logic behind a trend is strengthening, weakening, or changing direction.
This series is built upon a simple principle: Every economy has its own dominant transmission mechanism. To understand its trend, one must first understand which data matter most.
For the United States, consumption, employment, inflation and interest rates are central. For China, credit, investment, property, industrial activity and policy signals often carry greater weight. For the eurozone, exports, manufacturing, energy costs, inflation and internal financial stress matter deeply. For Japan, wages, inflation, the yen and monetary policy are central to understanding its transition. For Singapore, trade, electronics, imported inflation, exchange-rate policy, finance and property are crucial. For Australia, Canada, Brazil and the Gulf economies, commodities, external demand, fiscal conditions and currency movements play a central role.
The purpose of this series is not to produce identical country reports. It is to build a framework for identifying which data matter, why they matter, and how changes in those data may reshape economic and market trends.
