Introduction
The previous discussion examined El Niño as a climate phenomenon: how it forms, which regions are most exposed, and why agriculture often absorbs the initial shock. Yet beyond climate and agricultural production, another important question emerges: how can a climate event influence commodity markets and broader economic activity?
El Niño does not mechanically cause commodity prices to rise. Its influence depends on the conditions of the system it enters. When inventories are abundant, trade flows are stable, and supply chains remain resilient, even significant weather disruptions may have limited market effects. Conversely, when inventories are tight, exporting regions are concentrated, and supply conditions are already under pressure, the same climate shock may attract greater market attention.
This distinction is important. Climate shock is not the same as market impact. The weather is only the starting point. Market responses are shaped by expectations regarding supply, inventories, trade flows, policy measures, and perceptions of future scarcity.
Understanding El Niño, therefore, requires more than observing ocean temperatures. It also requires understanding how physical disruptions may be transmitted through agricultural and commodity systems.
The sections that follow move beyond surface-level commentary. They are written for readers who wish to understand how structure, space, and cognition interact — and how this understanding can be applied consistently across cycles and asset classes.
